The Good Samaritin: A guide for teaching the story

To start I teach first grade but this would be a good framework to elaborate on for teaching any age level.

Lets reflect on the 3 R’s of religious ed through the eyes of the parable of “The Good Samaritan”

1st do your research, read the bible story and know the story forward and backward so you can work with the children without constantly having to stop and refer back to the written word.

A normal class period for my class starts off with a movement song.

Then we shake out our fingers, our hands, our arms, our bodies, we turn around once then sit down…pretzel legs, eyes and ears facing forward ready to learn.

Then we pray

-sign of cross(first graders need a lot of review on the the right arm and way to do this)

-at least one more prayer and I often let them choose from the posters around the classroom but the prayers we have to choose from are:

– The Our Father

-The Glory Be

-The Hail Mary

Then we turn focus to the lesson of the day, and depending on the curriculum that changes.

Then its time for a bible story or two..but by this point just reading to them is going to lose them   so the first thing I do is ask for volunteers the children know to raise their hands without noise as I don’t call on children who are making lots of uh uh uh choose me..sounds



The Good Samaratin

Luke 10:25-37

Introduce the story

tell the children they are going to be hearing a story about a man who was badly injured

and what several people did when they saw him.

Ask the children if they’ve ever been hurt….maybe they fell on the playground or had their feelings hurt.

Now time for volunteers

Johnny you come up and lay on the floor you are our injured person

Susie I need you to come up you are a pharisee  ok now look and see johnny, now go as far away from him as you can and walk past him without looking.

Billy OK your turn today your roll is priest and you are going to come up and move far away and walk past johnny without looking

OK next we need a Samaritan(at this point the children don’t know what that means)

OK Michael I need you to start walking past johnny and then see him and help him up and bring him over here……

Suzy I need you to be our inn owner

Michael tell Suzy to take care of johnny  and pretend to give her money

ok now tell her that you will pay her for anything she spends on your way back

ok children take a bow…..go back to your seats(if I have time this is where I might have different kids in the class do the skit again so more get a chance to participate)

Now its time to think then talk

we ask the children what Jesus asked the the people he was talking to

Who was a neighbor to this man?

the children will say Michael was….

yes..Michael and he was the Samaritan

what about the priest and the pharisee?  were they good neighbors.

Who are some people you know that may need good neighbors?

How can you be a good neighbor to people you know?

Has there ever been a time when you’ve needed someone to be a good neighbor to you?

I always leave enough time at the end of class to review what we’ve learned up to that point in the year.

and then we end with our good by song

I tend prefer the song

love grows one by one(we sing this song with hand motions but not as fast as the link and not in silly voices!)
