Baptism, the first sacrament

As this is our topic for this week I thought perhaps I would post my thoughts here.

Prior to this class it would be great to send out a note

asking parents to share  their child some photos of their baptism

and if they are willing let the child bring a few to class.

We are baptized in water

and sealed by the holy spirit

Our parents and God parents agree to raise us as believers and teach us about God, Jesus and the Church

When we are older we are confirmed, that is we confirm that we believe and will continue to live, following Jesus. Obeying God…etc..

of course this is all over simplified..but I do teach first graders…

Here is a coloring page :

It is for this lesson that children really like sharing about themselves and their families….maybe they’ve witnessed a younger sibling or child being baptized

maybe they saw pictures of their own baptism

remind them of the holy water in church

and that when we are blessed with or blessing ourselves with the holy water

we are essentially renewing our baptismal vows

tell them about the sprinkling rite that happens during the Easter Season

love this song too!

Just keep reminding them that baptism is

the first sacrament

their first step at a lasting loving relationship with God

and that their

growth in God does not stop with the sacrament

but strengthens and continues for always
