All Are Welcome!…are they?

In our churches we have the song

All Are Welcome by Marty Haugen

All Are Welcome by Marty Haugen

Let us build a house
where love can dwell
And all can safely live,
A place where
saints and children tell
How hearts learn to forgive.

Built of hopes and dreams and visions,
Rock of faith and vault of grace;
Here the love of Christ shall end divisions;

Let us build a house where prophets speak,
And words are strong and true,
Where all God’s children dare to seek
To dream God’s reign anew.

Here the cross shall stand as witness
And a symbol of God’s grace;
Here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:

Let us build a house where love is found
In water, wine and wheat:
A banquet hall on holy ground,
Where peace and justice meet.

Here the love of God, through Jesus,
Is revealed in time and space;
As we share in Christ the feast that frees us:

All are welcome, all are welcome,
All are welcome in this place.

I love this song…it’s what drew me to my parish…it’s what drew me to becoming catholic after 20+ years of being Methodist.

I was welcomed…even before being catholic by the choir director at the time(may his soul rest in peace)

This song embodies

everything a church should be

All are welcome

let us build a house where love is found

love for all

no matter their societal assigned status

no matter their sex

no matter how they dress

All are welcome

and

All ARE welcome

at least by God!

but do we as parishioners

and

more importantly

as Sunday school teachers and catechists

truly welcome

every student

into our classroom

what about their parents

what about other teachers

are all welcome

to be near

to be a part

of the teaching of God’s word

that goes on in your classroom

and in your life

are you open

to the stories

and experiences

others can bring to you

to open your eyes

in a way that will further your understanding

of God, the Word of God, and God’s creation

whether or not you fully agree with  or understand what they are saying

God speaks to us

in many ways

through both loving open arms

and

tragedy

through miracles large….and small

I ask you again

ARE all welcome in your world?

Let us Pray:

Dear God, Father of all,

creator of everything

help us to be better stewards

of your earth

of your word

help us

to open your word to ALL we meet

help us to truly let

ALL be welcome

to walk with us

in our journey to you.

Amen
